Summer Gull Lake Fishing Guide Locations

Main lake structures become more important as the summer progresses on the Gull Lake Chain. Brainerd fishing guides will seek out structures like Brassier Bar, Bowtie Bar, and the northern tips of Squaw Point Flats during this time of year. Key locations are points, inside corners, and saddles. The best depths are just outside of the weed line in 14 to 18 feet of water. Wind direction is one of the best tools for determining which structures will be the most productive on a given day.

Strong, consistent, winds will push plankton and small invertebrates unto main lake flats during the summer. Hungry schools of perch will follow the drifting biomass as it gets pushed around the lake. Put enough food in an area and the walleyes will eventually show up outside the weeds. Brainerd fishing guides use wind direction to identify likely walleye locations in the summer. Structures with waves pushing into them are usually more productive than those structures with wave pushing away.

Electronics are an effective way to rule out large areas of unproductive water when walleye fishing. Many Brainerd fishing guides will not drop a line into the water until a school of walleyes has been seen on the depth finder. Knowing how deep the weeds stop growing on a lake is one of the keys to using a depth finder correctly. Walleyes are difficult, if not impossible, to see when they are tucked inside the weeds. They stick out like a sore thumb, however, when they venture outside the weeds.
